What exactly is a 'visceral reaction'?

You hear the term used once in a while, and I do get the general gist of it, I think, as meaning like some sort of physical, strong reaction to something... but what exactly does it mean? Like specifically? And what sort of thing would you say this about? Something emotional, happy, sad...? If anyone can just elaborate a bit about it that would be cool. :)
