Why aren't all mormons treated the same way? Fundamentalist or not, they still use the same book.?

Warren Jeffs is treated by the mainstream LDS as though his core beliefs are somehow different than the mainstream LDS. The truth is that he follows what the Doctrine and Covenants demand of him and all mormons. Political conveniences aside, the mainstream LDS has yet to remove these most controversial "prophesies" from their books. Why are their current policies more righteous than his? They (mainsteam LDS) are the ones who have abondoned their beliefs. Why should they be taken any more seriously than he is?
