Is drawing using eye and hand coordination simply means copying the lines?

This is my first time learning eye-hand coordination in my art school. I was wondering is drawing what you see not what you know simply means copying the lines very fast onto the paper not really drawing from imagination. I am really having trouble understanding this. So far what I was doing is just copying the lines of the object and putting it on paper.my question is what i'm doing correct way?
