You are absolutely right. But remember the meaning of words change over time. What was once liberal then is not the case now. They were for all the things you quoted but they were also die hard moralists as well. The liberals today still hold true many of the beliefs of the founding fathers but so do the Republicans, such as smaller governmental operations and moralistic views. Great point, and nice quotes.
